From PATERNO: The Archbishop of Vigan warned member of his diocese of Nova Segovia of dangers due to incipient revolt and advised them to find a safer place to move their families. One PATACSOPOLOS by name was an encargado, and heeding the warning moved his family to what is now called Bal-Lay , a valley between Bauang and Naguilian, where he remained an encargado there also. The people there had a hard time saying his name and shortened it to PATACSOS, which later became PATACSIL, and that is the spelling registered in the Municipal Archives of Bauang.
From EUPHROSINO The original name was TOMAS. One of the offspring was CHRISTENE TOMAS, so his full name was TOMAS TOMAS. He got fed up with the redundant sound, so he changed the family name to PATACSIL
From Stories told to LEOVIGILDO The original name was PATACXIL, roughly translated from the vernacular: “Man Carrying Axe”, referring to the occupation of men who fell trees, meaning “lumberjack”, wood cutter”, “forester”, connotation: A fighter or warrior whose favorite weapon is an axe. (Compare to the Chinese “hatchet man” and to the typical American Indian warrior “brave”) perhaps, an acceptable Nepotism: “An Axe wielding warrior” the spelling PATAXIL was modernized to PATACSIL in the town records of Bauang as early as 1740. When the Spanish Government required that all families must register their family names for census and tax purposes.
